Harvey believed in one world, he believed in working for world peace, he believed that we are all one family. A year or so before he died, my brother Jon interviewed him, and during the course of the interview he said that he supposed his original concept had gotten lost when he made his dramatic decision to remove the carved pieces and continue with Opus 40 as an immense abstraction. But in making his commitment to what Opus 40 became, I believe that he found the way to express sculptural thought, rather than expressing thought translated into sculpture, and that Opus 40 is his true statement of his beliefs, and everything he held dear.

I spent the day yesterday playing music with two of the members of the music ensemble I play in (one was the director) — with some others joining in for several pieces. But, in my own defense — we played challenging music; and ever since our concert, I’ve been practicing flutes instead of recorders, and traditional music more than early music. I was able to remember these things about myself and these players, and I was able to appreciate their gracious patience with me, without ever slipping into a kind of negative, grumpy interpretation of the situation. They just wanted to play through a bunch of music and hear how it sounded. They enjoyed our getting together to play music. But I also saw: I would rather be in practice on all of the instruments I play, at every moment, so that I can contribute to making a day like yesterday as good as it can be.

About all I knew of Dad’s childhood was that his dad was a dentist in Idaho Falls who drank too much of his own anesthetic, that they raised foxes for fur, and that his mom was a crack shot with a .22 rifle. Dad was not the kind of man you sat down with and said, Tell me about your childhood, Dad. That would have been a tad close for Dad’s comfort.Eventually, we discovered that it wasn’t so much that his life was all that bad; Thus, to accomplish what Dad accomplished is nothing short of miraculous, and his legacy has been taken up now by a group of very interesting offspring. My vision of Dad in heaven nowadays consists mostly of Dad tapping old dead ancestors on the shoulder and saying, Go talk to my son.
